On Wednesday\nnight, he tweeted a photo that, however intended, came over as a vile racist\ngag. He deleted the tweet as soon as he realised what he\u2019d so casually done,\nlater describing it as a \u2018crass and regrettable blunder\u2019. The worst day of his\nlife followed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No apology could save his BBC job. Tonight, at his first\nshow since being sacked, the question is whether he can save his reputation. He\u2019s\nhad a few nights to think about it. Will he address the elephant in the room\nright off the bat? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He must have been tempted to cancel, but, at twenty-five to\neight, he comes on and, for five minutes, apologises unreservedly for the\n\u2018horrible\u2019 tweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Here\u2019s the thing. It\u2019s all my own fault\u2026&nbsp; I\u2019m sorry and thanks for coming.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then he goes off and comes back out wearing his fez. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s great to get back to one of the few jobs I still\nhave.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019ll be references to his sacking throughout the show\nbut they lessen when he hits his stride. The first hour is a recap of his\nprevious show and first autobiography (basis of hit TV series, Cradle to the\nGrave). He paces the stage occasionally using a snooker cue as a pointer to photos\non a screen above him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s with the Sniffin\u2019 Glue and NME years that he hits his\nstride. We find Danny simultaneously courting his wife, Wend, a secretary\nthere, while going round the world with rock stars. Things fall apart, but the\non-off courtship reaches a moving conclusion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are just two Michael Jackson stories. \u2018This section\nused to be twenty minutes long, but\u2026\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s more than moved by his reception, saying he\u2019d been\nworried about being heckled. After the interval, he tells us he\u2019s just phoned Wend\nand \u2018for what it\u2019s worth you reduced her to a pile of tears.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gazza and Twizzle story with which he closes is a\ncorker. The show takes us up to 1988 and the start of his radio years. At over\nthree hours, it\u2019s too long, but Baker runs off our goodwill. He finishes by\ncalling this \u2018one of the greatest gigs of my career.
